MTV Video Music Awards 2020: Highlights of the Show and Winners

Last Sunday in New York, an awards ceremony was held for one of the most prestigious MTV Video Music Awards, which honors the brightest music performers and video clips of the past year. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the ceremony was held in a completely new format: instead of the traditional grand show at the Barclays Center sports arena with a large number of spectators, the organizers were forced to arrange a video broadcast for everyone. At the same time, they did not refuse live performances – Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, Maluma and other triumphant MTV Video Music Awards 2020 presented their bright musical numbers, but their performances were filmed not on the same stage, but in different locations. SPLETNIK.RU tells about the most memorable moments of the last ceremony and lists the winners.

The epic show, hosted by American actress and singer Keke Palmer, kicked off with a commemorative address honoring recently deceased Black Panther superhero Chadwick Boseman, who passed away last week after years of desperate battles with colon cancer. In her piercing speech, the presenter noted Boseman’s sparkling talent and stated that today’s show is dedicated to him:

Before we get into music, I want to remember the passing of Chadwick Boseman, an actor whose talent and passion are the true inspiration for all fans and all those who once crossed paths with him in his work. We dedicate today’s show to the person who has touched the hearts of so many people around the world. He is a real hero, both on screen and in life. His influence will last forever.

After a short lyrical digression, an enchanting music show began with the participation of the most popular music artists in the world. The first was the rapper The Weeknd with his hit Blinding Lights. The performer’s performance with the use of neon images and pyrotechnic special effects turned out to be very spectacular, also due to the complex camera work.

Later, the artist received the main award of the ceremony in the category “Video of the Year”, and was also awarded for the best song in the style of R&B. In his victory speech, The Weeknd admitted that it is difficult for him to rejoice in his own achievements against the background of what is happening in the world, and also demanded justice in the investigation of the cases of African Americans Jacob Blake (he was wounded by the police) and Brionne Taylor, who was shot by law enforcement officers during a search in her home.

Perhaps, Lady Gaga appeared on the stage last evening more often than others during the entire ceremony, and each time in a new original protective mask. The artist became a real triumphant at the MTV Video Music Awards 2020 and took away from the award as many as five statuettes, including for the song of the year and the best collaboration of the year for the duet Rain On Me with Ariana Grande. Gaga also received an award in the MTV Tricon category, introduced only this year, for her colossal influence and dedication to music, fashion and activism.
God! Guys, this is so cool! It really means a lot to me! You can’t even imagine! I have been making music since childhood, but I never even dreamed that I would receive an award for my other hobbies, – shared her emotions Lady Gaga in her thank you speech.

Later, the artist presented an incendiary musical number with Arina Grande: in sexy outfits, they performed their hit Rain On Me, which brought them awards at the last award in as many as three categories.

Another memorable number of the evening was the performance of Miley Cyrus. At the award she presented her new track Midnight Sky. At first, Miley’s performance was very restrained – exactly until she climbed the stairs and jumped on a giant disco ball: this episode immediately reminded fans of Cyrus’s cult music video for the song Wrecking Ball.

Last evening, Doja Cat, one of the most popular K-pop boy bands BTS, Colombian singer Maluma and many others, also surprised with her shocking numbers of virtual viewers of the MTV Video Music Awards 2020 with her hit Say So popular on TikTok.

The show ended with a brilliant performance by the Black Eyed Peas, who performed not only songs from their new album Translation, but also the long-time hit I Gotta Feeling.
