The Internet is buzzing – for several days now, everyone has been discussing the new clip of rapper Lil Nas X, in which he twerks in front of Satan. In our material, we collected the chronology of events and the reaction to the scandalous video, as well as the memes associated with it.
All weekend on the network, the new video of 21-year-old American rapper Lil Nas X called Montero (Call Me By Your Name) was vigorously discussed. In the title there is a reference to the film of the same name with Timothy Chalamet and Armie Hammer (the irony is that the rapper’s real name is Montero Lamar Hill), and in the video – to the work of the singer FKA Twigs, but most of all, the audience was excited by the scene with a private dance, which the rapper performs on the lap of Satan (before that, the lyrical hero of the video went down the pole to hell).

The premiere of the video also coincided with the release of an exclusive batch of Nike sneakers, which the rapper customized in collaboration with the art group MSCHF: sports shoes were equipped with a pentagram, an inverted cross and … a drop of human blood, as stated in the release. There are 666 pairs in total. The cost of one is $ 1,018, which is a reference to a passage from the Gospel of Luke (10:18):
I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning.

Although flirting with a devilish theme is far from a new technique in the world of show business and such images have been actively exploited by outrageous musicians for many decades (remember at least the young Ozzy Osbourne), this technique works flawlessly, provoking heated discussions. It turned out so in the case of Lil Nas X – he immediately became in the trend of Twitter, and in a couple of days the video was watched by more than 30 million YouTube users.
As you might expect, viewers reacted differently to the video. Someone praised the musician, someone accused him of offending the feelings of believers and inappropriate behavior. Nike, on the other hand, hastened to distance itself from the action, and representatives of the company said that they had no direct relation to the release of the drop.
We don’t have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF. Nike has not designed or manufactured these sneakers, and we do not endorse this collection.
A brand spokesman said on Sunday to the New York Times.
Reporters also contacted Brooklyn-based shoe brand MSCHF. They said that about six employees donated blood to customize the shoes.
We are not medical professionals, we did it ourselves. A drop of blood was mixed with ink filling the air bubble in the sneaker,
– explained Daniel Greenberg, co-founder of MSCHF.
The plot and meaning of the clip
At the beginning of the video, the rapper’s character is in the Garden of Eden and symbolizes Adam – the first person created by God. But the hero succumbs to temptation, and then the action is already transferred to another era.
Now the hero, imprisoned in handcuffs, awaits the moment of his execution amid the shouts of a raging crowd. After that, he descends into hell – straight on the striptease pole. There he meets Satan and attempts to seduce him – a successful one. Taking advantage of the moment, the hero kills Satan and places his crown on his head.
The rapper accompanied the release of the video with the publication of a letter to his 14-year-old self.
I wrote a song with our name. It’s about a guy I met last summer. I know we promised never to open up in public, I know we promised never to be that gay, I know we promised to die with this secret, but it will open the door for many other queer people to just exist. ,
– wrote the rapper.
He added that it was difficult for him to openly declare himself, and people accused him of “promoting the agenda.”
But the agenda is for people to simply stay out of the lives of others and stop telling them what they should be like,
– concluded the performer.
Recall that Lil Nas X himself came out in 2019 on the last day of the so-called Pride Month, which takes place in June and is dedicated to the life and rights of the LGBTQ + community.
Reactions and memes
The release of the clip and the shoes, as expected, excited the audience, and netizens began to actively share their opinions, so that Lil Nas X instantly went into Twitter trends. Not only ordinary listeners argued about the musician’s work – high-ranking US politicians also joined the discussion.
Our children are told that such a product is not only normal, but also “exclusive”. But do you know which is more exclusive? Their God-given eternal soul. We are fighting for the soul of our people. We need to fight. And you need to fight wisely. We must win,
– wrote the representative of the Republican Party and the Governor of South Dakota Christy Noem, commenting on the collection of shoes.
The tweet caught the eye of the rapper himself, and he did not become silent.
You are the governor, and you are tweeting about the damn sneakers! Get your job done!
– Lil Nas X answered her.
The rapper also posted a screenshot from the correspondence with his own father, who supported his son.
Very creative video. Looked at everything. Congratulations! Live your own life. I’m proud of you,
– wrote the father.
Lil Nas X is being praised for dancing with Satan. Kanye West has been criticized for giving his life to Christ. Welcome to 2021.
This video is overly sexualized, contains gender changes and talks about the seduction of the devil – all for the sake of what you call a widely accepted agenda. I hope the money is worth it boy
– wrote the video critics.
But many supported the rapper, and also tried to point out the prejudice of the public and double standards.
People seem to anger Lil Nas X more than the two mass shootings this month!
The people who run into Lil Nas X are the same people who watched “Lucifer” on Netflix!
People who are upset with the song Lil Nas X cannot understand how it should be normal to look at gays in a video, when we, LGBT people, have looked at heterosexual shit all our lives, and still remain gay.
– other netizens expressed their support.
Lil Nas X: “I’m in hell trying to get an autograph from Lil Nas X.”“Lil Nas X before and after the pandemic.”
Prank with apologies
Lil Nas X, who was actively involved in the discussion of his new video, decided to eventually follow another pronounced trend of the modern agenda and apologize. True, he did it again in an ironic manner, again provoking netizens.
The rapper recorded the video and posted it on his channel titled “Lil Nas X Apologizes For Satanic Shoes.” In the first frames of the video, the rapper himself really appears and begins to calm the audience, but then this part abruptly ends, and the same scandalous scene with the seduction of Satan from the video appears on the screen again.
